Poker Chips Checklist
Home gambler’s checklist to poker chips
The chips are a vital part of any poker game. But there is a lot to choose from and it might be difficult do find the right ones. This checklist will help you find poker chips that are perfectly suited for you:
Your wallet size
Plastic chips are the cheapest ones, and might be a good choice if you have a small budget. However, composite chips generally last longer and will probably save you some money in the long run. Clay composite chips are the most luxurious and also the most expensive. The weight of the chips is another factor; heavy chips cost more than light chips.
Game regularity
If you host poker home games on a regular basis, you will need chips that are durable. In general, composite chips will last longer than clay chips.
The size of your home games
A good rule of thumb is to have 75-100 chips per player in your home game. You should never have less than 40 chips per player when you play poker. If you do, the game will probably be less enjoyable.
The look of the chips
There are hundreds of different poker chip designs, and your aim should obviously be to find one that’s appealing to you (and perhaps your friends). The material the chips are made of might actually influence the design. For example, clay chips may vary slightly in design since the material spreads out the color. Composite chips, on the other hand, are very hard and able to display very sharp and detailed patterns.
Making chip tricks
Composite chips have a slippery surface and are therefore excellent to make chip tricks with. Clay chips generally demand a higher level of skill. Heavy chips are preferable if you want to impress your friend with chip tricks.
Pre-printed values
Some poker chips have a value printed on them, others don’t. If your home games vary a lot when it comes to stakes and number of players, blank chips are obviously preferable. However, if you have chips with pre-printed values the players will have one less thing to think about. You might avoid some confusion this way.
